Description
Dreaming of Game Time is part of my Abstract Collection.
I painted Dreaming of Game Time in honor and memory of my daddy, Franklin Delano Henderson, who was a walking/talking encyclopedia of baseball. He did not have a favorite team. He just loved the game, especially the origins and hay days of baseball, when our society was chiefly agricultural. There was often a game playing on the radio or TV throughout my childhood. My daddy also had a fondness for time pieces and the passage of time. I painted Dreaming of Game Time in the style of Surrealism (like Salvador Dali), mixed with expressionism to illustrate a fan's life long love of baseball. I used the Chicago Cubs vs the St. Louis Cardinals at Wrigley Field because they are arch rivals in my home state of Illinois. Since I am the 3rd of 4 daughters, I painted myself as a blob, sleeping and dreaming on 3rd base. The batter hits a foul ball, starting the passage of time through the clocks in a counter clockwise direction, starting with the mantel clock at the bottom. Time melts away over a 24 hour period. As the ball flies through the air, it ages, becoming more yellowed and worn, until it hits and shatters the clock on the shelf at left, crashes into the ear of corn on the other side of the mantel clock, and finally flies apart in the air, where time is almost up, illustrating how quickly a life time can pass. The farm at the top is based on the 5 generation farm where I was raised. The ear of corn at the bottom reminds me of the yellow buffer that is on the top of the outfield fences at all Little League Fields. No matter how great their record is, all professional baseball players started in Little League. To add a bit of humor to the piece, some cows have gotten loose and are making themselves at home on the field.
Dad passed away on February 29, 2020. Dad always enjoyed talking about the anomalies of the calendar and time. He never did let me live down the time I called Leap Year, Jump Year when I was a kid. So it seems appropriate that dad leapt into heaven on Leap Year Day.
