Description
Our aunt and uncle worked a dairy farm in northern, IL. On that farm, they had a dog, a mutt, they named Freckles, for obvious reasons. He was a very happy, goofy dog, that loved to be a part of everything that happened on the farm. Aside from chasing a few chickens, he received few rebukes. When my husband and I visited them with our daughter, who was of preschool age, Freckled would trot up to her, give her a quick lick on her nose to greet her and then move on to the rest of us. He never tried to jump on her. He just gave her that one quick lick and moved on before she had a chance to react or be scared.
When we visited in the summer, we would take a hay rack ride through their property. Of course Freckles wanted to come along. He jumped up on the hay rack and rode with us for a while. Then he would get down to run patrols, to make sure there were no aggressive squirrels or rabbits along the way.
Freckles lived to be 14 or 15 years old, which is a long life for a free running farm dog. One summer, we came to visit and Freckles was not there. We were told that one day he left and never came back. He knew his time had come. But Freckles would not want us to be sad. He simply crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and we will see him again, just as happy and goofy as he had always been.
